A rare Walter Friedrich Cave (1863-1939), Model 4, Arts & Crafts custom built piano by C. Bechstein, serial number 59884, Berlin, Germany, 1905. Restored rectangular walnut body with tapered conical legs on front travelling up from underside of piano to attached brass lamps. Full cast iron frame with internal under-damping.
Overstrung, weighted keys, responsive light to medium touch, full rounded mellow tone, renewed brass trimmings and name plate, new name-board felt, fine polished casing, perfect soundboard, tight pins, tuned to Concert Pitch and ready to play.
The original ivory keys are restored to new and are white, flush, with no chips. This is one of the finest examples of an Arts & Crafts C. Bechstein, considered to be one of the most reputable German makers of all time. What makes this Bechstein even more desirable, is that it was designed by Walter Cave, one of the greatest architects and designers in British History.
Walter Frederick Cave (1863-1939) practiced architecture in the Arts and Crafts style before maturing, as did the style of the day, into that of Classical Revival. He set up in 1888 as a sole professional practitioner and became an active member of the Art Workers Guild for a period of some 27 years. His work was regularly exhibited at the Royal Academy and the Arts and Crafts Exhibition Society. In 1906 he became a Fellow of the Royal Institute of British Architects and for two years, 1907 and 1908, was President of the Architectural Association. Walter Cave’s work is essential reading for architectural historians generally, and in particular for students of the Arts and Crafts and the Classical Revival styles.
