Chappell

1930's Chappell Student Professional Overstrung Upright Piano

Chappell are high quality hand built instruments constructed of fine woods, German and English components, and the very best seasoned materials. This Chappell was designed to be robust and unaffected by changes in climate and humidity. Most were sold to music schools and institutions because they could withstand the hack of everyday use by teachers and students alike.

The tone is mellow, even, pure and bright in the high end. Original ivory keytops that are nicely weighted, with a responsive medium touch and previously rebuilt action. The rebuild includes: hammer heads, tapes, dampers, felts, springs, leathers, buckskins, one bass string, two middle strings, two treble strings, new lining to the back section of piano, refinished keytops and brass throughout, stripped action: cleaned-realigned-regulated and tuned to Concert Pitch but capable of being stable and an even higher pitch. The medium to dark mahogany casing was stripped and French polished by hand to a new standard. Ideal for all levels of player, from beginner to advanced.

History: Chappell & Company was established in London in 1811 by Samuel Chappell, Johann Chappell, and Francis Latout. The three gentlemen were already partners in a music publishing business, and they started out retailing pianos in their music store. In the 1840 the company started building their own pianos. During the late 19th Century, Chappell imported and sold organs by the American manufacturer Clough & Warren. In 1901, the piano manufacturing and music publishing departments of the business became separate, and production of pianos was increased. During the 1920's, Chappell purchased a handful of illustrious English piano manufacturing firms including Allison & Co., Collard & Collard, and John Strohmenger & Sons. The Kemble Piano Company of London produced Chappell pianos until the year 2000. This paragraph is taken from an article on Wikipedia and is available under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike Licence.
